Choose the right maintenance strategy with SAP ASPM

Table of contents

For asset-intensive companies, it is important to always strive for the highest possible availability of assets and safety and the lowest possible costs. But how do you achieve this? SAP Asset Strategy and Performance Management (SAP ASPM) offers the excellent solution for this. In this blog we explain how you can choose the right maintenance strategy with SAP ASPM, including the latest features.

Did you know that many asset-intensive companies regularly face the challenge of keeping maintenance costs as low as possible without increasing the risk of malfunctions? For this you can use methodologies and processes such as FMEA, RCM and RCA. With these methods you gain insight into the use of assets and you can make the right choices for an optimal maintenance strategy.

Gain optimal insight into assets

With the amount of data available today, we regularly see companies getting stuck in an isolated collection of information that is not accessible from other parts of the organization (data silos). Either in Excel or in another software that is not integrated with the operational maintenance system.

With the cloud solution SAP Asset Strategy and Performance Management (SAP ASPM), which is part of the Intelligent Asset Management suite, you gain an optimal overview and insight into the data about all assets.

Determine the right maintenance strategy

With SAP ASPM you identify critical assets, determine the correct maintenance strategy and implement this strategy in the ERP system, such as S/4HANA. All this is based on known reliability methods.

Figure 2: The ASPM process

The ASPM process starts with defining assets in the IAM system (see point 1 in the image above). The assets can come from the ERP system, such as S/4HANA. You then determine the criticality of each asset with a risk analysis (see point 2).

Depending on the degree of criticality, you implement the correct methodology (RCM, FMEA or RBI) (see point 3). With this methodology you recommend the right maintenance strategy. With these preventive and corrective actions you can optimally maintain assets.

You collect all recommendations in the 'Preventive Maintenance Review App' (see point 4). From this app you can check the recommended maintenance strategy and implement it in the ERP system (see point 5). Over time, you can analyze and improve the strategies by clearly reviewing previous assessments in the ASPM system (see point 6).

With a risk matrix you determine a risk score (degree of criticality). You set up the matrix company-specifically. This allows you to calculate a score for different categories (impacts). The score is based on the probability of an event and its consequences.

FMEA-assessment

With an FMEA assessment you analyze the types of asset 'failures' that can occur. These are also called the 'Failure Modes'. You first start by identifying the causes of the 'Failure Modes'. You then determine the RPN score (Risk Priority Number) with the variables: 'detectability', 'occurence' and 'effects'.

The RPN score provides an indication of the degree of importance of each 'Failure Mode'. You can make recommendations for the correct, appropriate maintenance strategy for each cause of such a 'Failure Mode'.

RCM-assessment

With an RCM assessment you define the functions, possible failures, possible 'Failure Modes' and 'effects' of all assets. With all these definitions you can clearly guide the user through a decision diagram.

Recommendations for the right maintenance strategy

After going through all parts of the process, you bundle all recommendations together for the right maintenance strategy within the organization. You can review this clearly in the central application of SAP ASPM.

Maintenance with overview and structure

After going through the entire process, as an asset-intensive company you have insight and overview of all asset data. You easily determine the right maintenance strategy and implement it in the organization's ERP system.
