How VolkerWessels Took Its Insights to the Next Level
VolkerWessels is one of the largest construction companies in the Netherlands. With a focus on sustainable development, they operate globally in various sectors, including infrastructure, energy, mobility, and real estate. They offer a wide range of services, from construction and engineering to project management and maintenance, contributing to the built environment and societal progress in and outside The Netherlands.
The VolkerWessels concern yields multiple sub-companies including VolkerWessels Telecom, Visser & Smit Hanab and VolkerWessels UK. For the former two companies, Emixa assisted with the implementation of their new SaaS ERP (Microsoft Business Central) system. On top of this, a modern data landscape was requested to meet the companies’ reporting and data science needs. Similar wishes were present at VolkerWessels UK, where Emixa was asked to bring in their expertise in the field of data modelling in the construction industry.
Business Challenges
With the new, modern ERP solution came a need for additional management and operational reports for nearly all business domains including finance, projects, purchasing, HR, time registration, and services & maintenance.
Moreover, the reporting landscape itself needed modernisation too. Financial reporting is regularly done in Excel and in many instances, a single source of truth is lacking, which affects the reliability of reporting. Besides, in the current platform, data was not yet widely and quickly available in a scalable way. This prevented the companies from taking the next step in their data journey. How can it modernise its data landscape?
Keys to Success
Emixa and VolkerWessels have been partners in digital transformation for many years, working on a large variety of projects related to financial consolidation, planning, IT migrations, and reporting. For this project, our consultants specialised in data & analytics were asked to help.
Our consultants have implemented multiple data platforms in the construction industry and apply this specific knowledge to VolkerWessels Telecom, Visser & Smit Hanab and VolkerWessels UK. Together with the companies’ data teams, we implemented a state-of-the-art cloud data warehouse. For this, we use the latest Microsoft Azure technology available in the market, which not only fulfils their current data demands but also offers lots of future AI possibilities.
Next to that, we used our strong project management capabilities to consider all aspects of the implementation. Our consultants made sure topics such as data ownership, standardisation of business concepts, and technical tool requirements were all taken care of, ensuring the new data platforms will be used successfully by its management and operations.
Results
The new data platforms enable the VolkerWessels companies to consult their desired operational and management insights faster, more accurately and at larger scale. They regain trust in their data and moreover are now able to bring their data solutions live easily. By delivering over 50 dashboards across 10+ business domains, the companies’ data teams have along with Emixa grown in data professionalism, expertise and knowledge related to BI & AI.
Emixa: enabling VolkerWessels to become more data-driven
Emixa was VolkerWessels Telecom's strategic and implementation partner for the migration to our new SaaS ERP system. With the delivery of a new data platform and dozens of reports, Data & Analytics played a significant role in this project.
VolkerWessels Telecom appreciated the collaboration with Emixa consultants because they not only mastered the technology but also had a good understanding of and knowledge about the business processes.
The excellent collaboration resulted in, aside from the modern data platform, standardized reports and insights that meet the functional requirements of our business.
