  • Maintenance and asset management processes had developed differently across MIVB's business units, making it harder to collaborate, stay consistent, and see clearly across the organisation.

  • The existing SAP ECC landscape had accumulated years of custom development, adding complexity to any future change.

  • A solid digital foundation that supports future change and innovation.

  • Pragmatic simplification and harmonisation of maintenance and asset management processes, delivered within the constrained scope and timeline of a Brownfield migration.

  • Improved data quality and transparency in maintenance and asset management.

SAP S/4HANA (brownfield Migration)

From fragmented to harmonised

MIVB, the public transport operator for Brussels, depends on reliable maintenance and asset management to keep its metro, tram and bus network running across multiple sites in and around the city. The organisation was running SAP ECC in a landscape that had evolved over many years and picked up a lot of custom development along the way. To move to SAP S/4HANA, MIVB worked with a migration partner on the broader project and teamed up with Emixa specifically to simplify, harmonise and strengthen its maintenance approach.

Working from what teams already knew

The technical migration was never the hardest part. Different business units had built their own ways of working over the years, which meant the real job was harmonising maintenance and asset management processes across the organisation, cutting complexity that had built up over time, and putting a standardised foundation in place — one that could support future change and make it easier to work with third parties.

Emixa worked closely with stakeholders across MIVB's business units and with the Maintain to Settle team, building on the process knowledge those teams already had rather than starting from scratch. That collaboration translated what the business actually needed into practical decisions, and it built the shared direction a migration like this depends on.

On site through the difficult parts

Emixa's consultants were on site through workshops, testing and go-live — not just to run the migration but to support end users directly, work through issues as they came up, and keep momentum during the phases where projects like this usually stall. Every workshop, decision, configuration choice and transport was documented as the project went, which kept the transition transparent and consistent instead of relying on memory.

A foundation to build on

MIVB went live on 6 January 2026, across all departments and sites, without major issues. With SAP S/4HANA now in place, maintenance and asset management processes are simplified and harmonised, data quality and transparency have improved, and MIVB has a more stable base to build on. This was never only about replacing the technology underneath its operations. It was about giving the organisation room to run daily maintenance more efficiently and work more easily with partners, without being held back by the systems and processes that came before.

"Anyone who chooses to work with Emixa chooses a partner that is committed, honest and solution-oriented. You get a team that stands side by side with you, actively listens, thinks along in solutions, shows alternatives in the system, communicates openly and helps you make the right decisions. Emixa clearly goes the extra mile to arrive at the best possible solution." — Sofie Noël, MIVB
